At the Dopoi Center, Indigenous-Based Tourism offers a different model for experiencing Maasailand: one rooted in Maasai knowledge, relationships with wildlife, and stewardship of the land. Rather than treating Maasailand simply as a destination for wildlife tourism, Dopoi recognizes it first as the home of the Maasai people: a living cultural landscape where people, wildlife, and pastoral life have existed together for millenia. Built through trusted partnerships between Maasai community members and international relationships cultivated over decades, Dopoi’s model creates opportunities for visitors to learn directly from the people who call this land home while supporting a pastoral economy that sustains both land and community. Maasai youth are trained and employed as guides, instructors, hospitality staff, and managers; women’s beading cooperatives, the Mara Guides Association, and other local businesses share in the benefits of tourism; and more tourism income remains within Maasai communities. Through ecologically sustainable, community-driven tourism, Dopoi seeks to create genuine connection, reciprocity, and cultural exchange while helping build a future in which Maasai people remain the custodians, storytellers, and beneficiaries of their own land and culture.
